Everyone just screams their team is the best online. Needed actual proof. Figured I’d try to find out myself, see how messy it really gets.
My First Dumb Idea
Straight up, I started with social media. “How hard could it be?” Famous last words. Grabbed a notebook and fired up Twitter. Searched for team hashtags one by one. “#MI”, “#CSK”, “#RCB”, all that jazz.
- Counted mentions for each team over the last season.
- Tried to track followers for the main team accounts.
- Looked for fan groups numbers. Big mistake.
Total chaos. CSK and MI were neck and neck, mentions flying everywhere. RCB? Man, their fans are LOUD online, especially when Kohli plays. But is that real fans? Or just noise? Also, fake accounts, bots liking everything? Useless.
Changing Course Like a Drunk Driver
Social media was a dead end. Time for Plan B. Heard Google Trends shows what people search. “Popularity search, maybe?” Okay, searched for each IPL team name over the past five years.
Got a squiggly graph. Mumbai Indians usually higher, CSK right there especially after wins. RCB surprisingly solid too, even when they lose a lot – loyalty, I guess. Teams like Rajasthan Royals or Sunrisers? Smaller bumps. Interesting, but still… searches don’t equal dedicated fans paying for tickets and merch.

- Merch Talk (Asked folks at local sports shops, unofficially, which shirts sell more).
- Stadium Roar (Remembered seeing videos, seeing Chennai’s “Whistle Podu” army).
Tried to give points in each category. Messy, subjective? Yeah, totally. No official database exists, gotta work with what you got.
The Moment of Truth… Kinda
Added my messy points. Held my breath.
And the winner? Mumbai Indians. Not by miles, but they just kept topping each weird little comparison. CSK was breathing down their neck, super close second. Those two are giants, no shock there.
RCB though? Wildcard. Third place, but wow, their fan energy online is unreal. Maybe not the biggest absolute count, but definitely the most passionate online, maybe? Other teams trailed behind, Kolkata Knight Riders popped up sometimes.
So, my final, totally unscientific verdict:

There it is. Took hours of digging through nonsense data for something everyone kinda already felt. Would I do it again? Doubt it. But hey, now I know the struggle firsthand.
