So today I finally got around to testing that JOH thing against EAC setup, you know, what everybody’s talking about lately. Felt like I needed to see what the fuss was about myself. Here’s exactly how my morning went trying to get this running.
The Damn Setup Headache
First thing, dug out my old Windows laptop from the basement closet. Dust bunnies everywhere. Plugged it in, held my breath, and hit the power button. Damn thing actually booted up! Small win. Found the official websites quick enough – grabbed the installers for both JOH and EAC.
Clicked the EAC installer first. Smooth. Done in like, one coffee sip. Thought, “This ain’t so bad.” Then came JOH. Double-clicked… nothing. Triple-clicked… zip. Panic mode starting. Found some forum post mentioning it needs admin rights. Right-clicked, “Run as administrator.” Bingo. Installed. Basic hurdle cleared, felt kinda dumb for a sec.
Configuration Circus
Opened EAC first. Looked… complex. Buttons, menus, settings everywhere. Took a deep breath. Went looking for the config file place. Found it buried deep inside the app folder. Like seriously deep.Modified it with Notepad – just copied the beginner settings someone sensible posted online. Hoped I spelled everything right.
Now JOH. Launched it. Even fewer instructions. Searched online for like twenty minutes until I found a basic config sample. Copied that text, pasted it into JOH’s own weird config box inside the program itself. Hit Save. Prayed it stuck.Plugged in my USB external drive where I keep my test stuff. JOH saw it immediately, so that was another small win. EAC needed me to point at it manually – took a couple tries.
The First Real Run… Sorta
Time for the moment of truth. Clicked “Start” on both programs. Sat back. EAC threw up a warning first pop-up window! Something about access. Said “Yes, okay!” nervously. It started doing its thing. JOH? Just blinked a light silently. No pop-ups, no fuss.Watched the logs crawl by. Felt like watching paint dry, honestly. After a few minutes, both seemed to finish quietly. No explosions. Good sign.
Making Sense of… Anything?
Checked the log files next. EAC dumped out files everywhere in its own folder system. Took me a few minutes just to find the actual results log. Open it… wall of text. Like, seriously dense. Saw numbers, timestamps, lots of “SUCCESS” lines though, so figured it was probably okay?
JOH was the opposite. Found its log in one simple place. Opened it… surprisingly readable! Timestamps, actions, clear entries showing what it actually tried to do step-by-step. Saw one line screaming “WARNING: Possible delay detected – Offset +1.5ms”. Made sense, that old USB drive ain’t exactly speedy.
Basic “Working” Setup… For Now
So here’s what actually ended up working for me this first try:
- Admin rights for install: Don’t skip this, JOH needs it.
- EAC config edit: Manual Notepad job on its config file.
- JOH config paste: Copy-paste a starter config into its internal box.
- Point to the drive: Tell EAC where stuff is.
- Click Start, pray.
End result? Both ran without crashing. Got logs. Saw some success messages and one warning. That’s further than I got last week trying to fix my washing machine. Basic setup is kinda working now. Not tweaked, not perfect, but it’s alive. Figure tomorrow I’ll mess with settings and probably break it all again. Why is this stuff never just plug-and-play?
