Just bought those LED stumps
So yeah, I finally picked up a set of those LED cricket stumps. Everyone kept saying how awesome they are for night games. Looked simple enough online. Got home, ripped open the box, and honestly… felt kinda lost at first. The instructions might as well have been written in hieroglyphics. Way too many tiny wires and parts. My initial thought? “Dumbest model ever.” Just dumped everything out onto the garage floor and stared at it.
Figuring out the mess
Grabbed the main base unit first – the chunky thing supposed to power everything. Couldn’t even find the ‘On’ button for like five minutes. Ended up fumbling with these little light sensors on the sides. Turns out they gotta be facing straight up? Didn’t know that. Nearly snapped one off trying to force it in. Massive tip number one: Check which way the sensors point before you jam ’em in!
Connecting the actual stump poles to the base felt like wrestling with spaghetti. The wires were way too long, kept tangling up. If you just connect them loosely, they dangle like mad and probably break when the ball hits. Tried taping them. Disaster. Looked awful. Then, remembered seeing some zip ties in my toolbox. Wrapped the extra wire along the pole and zipped it tight every few inches. Way cleaner and safer. Felt a bit smug finding that out myself. Should show the idiots who designed this how it’s done!
Actually trying them out (the real struggle)
Took the whole contraption to my backyard for a test run. Pitched my kids a few balls trying to hit the stumps. First hit… clunk! Lights flashed red, but the whole base unit tipped over like a drunk guy. Absolute fail. Clearly needed to anchor it. Our grass is kinda soft. Tried pushing the metal stakes deeper – bent one almost straight. Fantastic.
Went full caveman mode. Found these heavy patio bricks. Just plonked one firmly on each foot of the base unit. Weight is your friend. Another solid slam into the stumps? Lights flashed bright red, and the whole thing barely wobbled. Victory! Cheap solution, zero finesse, but it works.
Keeping the lights bright
Played two nights and noticed the lights getting kinda dim. Batteries already? Felt too quick. Opened the battery compartments on the bails – these tiny coin cells. The manual said one type, but shoved in some cheap ones I had lying around. Probably my fault. Went out, bought the exact expensive name-brand batteries it listed. Lesson learned: Don’t skimp here. Gotta use the right juice. Lights were blazing bright again.
So, after nearly throwing the whole kit over the fence a couple of times, here’s what ACTUALLY works:
- Zip tie those wires tight to the poles. Looks neat, stops damage.
- Weight down the base like crazy. Patio bricks, sandbags, whatever heavy junk you’ve got.
- Pay attention to the stupid sensors. Make sure they’re pointing skyward for the auto-on to work right at dusk.
- Buy the proper branded batteries for the bails. Generic ones just ain’t worth the headache.
Took way longer than I thought. Ended up missing that crucial run-out last Tuesday coz my lights were dimming! My boys laughed. Laughed! At their own dad! But hey, next game? My stumps will light up like fireworks and stay put. Hopefully get my redemption wicket. Still feels like the designers never actually used these things. My garage floor looked like a bomb site. Worth it? Yeah, now they finally work.
